Why are the majority of people in yahoo’s christian chat room always arguing about stuff amongst themselves?

There are certain perks to dating a person who is spiritually mature. You’ll find that there are deeper conversations, and that a lot of childish, petty issues get resolved in a more diplomatic way. You’ve been hanging around online dating chatrooms for quite some time and have come across someone who also believes as you, that it’s important for a person to explore his/her spirituality before anything else. Pretty soon, you are talking more and more about different religions, how they differ, how they are alike, and how they have changed people’s lives.

And before you knew it, you’ve been chatting regularly. One day, the two of you decided to meet up. You’re very sure that even if this date doesn’t work out, you’ve gained a new friend. Upon meeting your spiritual man for your date, you’re bowled over by how attracted you feel towards him. You feel that the deal has only gotten better – here’s someone who’s spiritual, intellectual, AND someone you have chemistry with.

Along the course of dinner, however, he tells you that he’s a Christian. While you feel no alarm in him being a Christian (because why should you?), you feel a bit apprehensive because he has already chosen his religion, while you are clearly still exploring what path to take.

At some point before dessert, you decide that perhaps you can be friends. After you’ve had some wine and he held your hand, you barter with yourself that maybe you could try this out before passing judgment.

Since this could be a tricky situation – given that you’re on related but not parallel lines – here are some things to remember:

- Be as politically correct as you can be. Try to discuss and debate religion in the most generic way you can

- Make sure that you keep the debates out of the intimate and tender moments

- Talk sensibly. Wars have been waged because of religion. If you feel as if you’re getting closer and closer romantically but still find argument in the smallest religion-related things, think first before you start a fight. If you look back at this in 10 years, will this spat really have made a difference in your life? If it’s so petty that it won’t even be significant in six months, drop it

- Give a lot of importance on other things you have aside from your quest for spirituality

- If you have nothing else in common, you might just be treading on dangerous ground. Perhaps it would be best for you to consider if this relationship could be good for you. Love can sometimes be enough – but that’s not adding spiritual conflict and the lack of other neutral ground

We give religion a wide berth and a lot of respect (which it deserves) but there is no need to beat around the bush. There is no need to lift the usual rules of dating decorum just because gods are in the package. Trying to make this work would entail that you also learn a lot about Christianity, see how it suits you. If it doesn’t, then there’s nothing you can do. Each person has her own spiritual path cut out for her. However, you can still choose – if it comes to that – to just align to your partner’s faith for the sake of love. There are no set rules to compromise, and there is no discounting a romantic connection. You will be the one decide your comfort level, anyway, so it shouldn’t be so hard to venture into one particular religion just as you would try out a sport to make sure that you can relate to your partner’s interests.

Perhaps of more interest is if the other party will also be willing to go the extra mile and also explore where you are treading spiritually. His willingness to compromise (even if you end up taking his path) and concern for your feelings are key indicators if the relationship is worthy of being pursued.
